The Town became an incorporated municipality in 1998 and is governed by a five-member Town Council. Oak Ridge boasts a rich history of agrarian culture and is known for such gems as the Old Mill of Guilford and Oak Ridge Military Academy. We hope that you will find this site informative and that it will help to answer any questions that you may have.  Historic Heritage Grants awardedOak Ridge’s Historic Preservation Commission approved its first round of Historic Heritage Grants, designed to strengthen and preserve Oak Ridge’s rich historic heritage by providing small scale, high impact grants to preserve historic properties that are at the heart of our town. This year’s grants total $5,250 which, in turn will leverage an additional $30,000 in matching funds that will be contributed by property owners. As a result, this year’s grants will support more than $36,000 in exterior improvements to key historic structures in Oak Ridge.  $2,000 was awarded to the Oak Ridge Foundation to support the repair and restoration of the front and side entrances of Alumni Hall (1914), one of the primary buildings at the Oak Ridge Military Academy and part of the Oak Ridge Military Academy Historic District. Alumni Hall is also a key contributing structure to the Oak Ridge Historic District.  $2,000 was awarded to Gary and Myra Blackburn to support reconstruction of balustrades atop the porch roofs on both sides of the Larkins House (c. 1933) and replacement of window awnings to match early photos of the house, located at 2345 Oak Ridge Road. The Larkins House is a contributing structure in the Oak Ridge Historic District and will be recognized by the Town of Oak Ridge with a historic marker in 2016.  $1,000 to Theresa Hammond and Roy Nydorf to support the restoration and replacement of exterior window shutters for the front and sides of the Sanders-Blaylock House (c. 1815), which is a Guilford County Historic Landmark located just outside the Oak Ridge Historic District at 1815 Oak Ridge Road. The Sanders-Blaylock House was recognized by the Town of Oak Ridge with a historic marker in 2008.  $250 to Barry and Susie Westmoreland to support the replacement of the front half of the roof of the J. L. Sawyer House (c. 1919) at 2421 Oak Ridge Road with shingles designed to mimic the dimensional appearance of the original cedar shake roof. The Sawyer House is a contributing structure in the Oak Ridge Historic District and was recognized by the Town of Oak Ridge with a historic marker in 2014.  Oak Ridge’s Historic Heritage Grants are awarded by the Oak Ridge Historic Preservation Commission and funded by the Town of Oak Ridge. For more information, including grantee contact names, contact Oak Ridge Town Sandra Smith at 336 644 7009. Our featured band for the month is Cruise Control, so join us for some boogie and blues. as well as some easy listening. Park in the main parking lot, and bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Concessions will be available, or bring a picnic dinner. Admission is free, but please make a donation to help pay the band. Rain date:  Sunday, Aug. 14, 2-3:30 p.m.Music in the Park events are held the second Saturday of each month.
